The Lotus Garden

The Lotus Garden is an initiative aimed at supporting women who have moved on from a domestic abuse refuge into their new homes. Often, these women do not have the resources to fully furnish or decorate their living spaces, leaving them with little comfort or sense of ownership. Through this project, we seek to offer each woman a selection of plants to brighten her new home and provide a nurturing, hopeful start in her new life.

Building community through gardening

Our regular gardening sessions provide a welcoming and supportive space where women can connect, share experiences, and grow together. These hands-on sessions allow survivors and volunteers to come together to pot, nurture, and maintain plants, creating both a physical and emotional environment of growth and healing. Whether you're an experienced gardener or new to the activity, these sessions offer a chance to learn, relax, and build meaningful relationships in a safe and uplifting setting.

Our partner

We are proud to be delivering the Lotus Garden Project in partnership with Cultivating Change, a charity that uses gardening to support wellbeing, confidence, and connection. Together, we will offer gentle, welcoming growing sessions where women can learn simple skills such as caring for plants, taking cuttings, and creating something of their own. These sessions are designed to be accessible and supportive—no experience needed. Each woman will leave with plants and the knowledge to care for them, helping to bring comfort, life, and a sense of ownership to her new home after leaving refuge. This partnership is also about long-term empowerment. Cultivating Change will support our team to continue running sessions in the future, while offering ongoing guidance, resources, and a wider community of growers.

Why the Lotus Garden?

The Lotus Garden honours the luminous spirits of two extraordinary women who are no longer with us yet forever guide our hearts toward hope. Like the lotus, pushing through mud to reveal its radiant petals, their memory reminds us that resilience blooms brightest in adversity.
